Saint Mark, a cousin of Barnabas accompanied Saint Paul on his first missionary journey and later went with him to Rome. He wrote one of the four Gospels and it is said to be the oldest and shortest. The Gospel of Mark emphasizes Jesus’s rejection by humanity while showing God’s triumphant glory. He is not one of the 12 apostles, just like Luke because we are not certain that he met Jesus personally. He was a disciple of Saint Peter whose teaching was the basis for Mark’s gospel. Mark is said to be the founder of the church of Alexandria and bishop of Alexandria, Egypt and Venice. The famous Piazza San Marco, claims Mark as its patron saint; the large basilica there is believed to have his remains.

Known as “Lily of the Mohawks”, Kateri Tekakwitha was an Algonquin-Mohawk laywoman who converted to Catholicism at the age of nineteen. She desired to give her life to God and chose not to marry, leaving her village to live in a Jesuit mission village near the St. Lawrence River. Kateri is remembered for her virtue of chastity and being shunned by her tribe because of her conversion to Christ. Minutes after her death, it was reported that her face appeared radiant and the scars of the smallpox which claimed her life disappeared. Her last words were, “Jesus, Mary, I love you.” She is the first Native American to be canonized in the Catholic Church. St. Kateri is the patron of ecologists, the environment, and Native Americans. Today, we pray through the intercession of St. Kateri Tekakwitha, that as Christian disciples, we may become better stewards of the Earth, taking care of all the beauty that God has created.
