St. John of Avila was a well-known priest, mystic and writer in the sixteenth-century Spain and a good friend of St. Ignatius Loyola and adviser of St Teresa of Avila. He was born at Almodovar del Campo in the province of Ciudad Real to wealthy parents of Jewish descent. He was sent to study law; however, he had no interest in it. After three years of penance and prayer, he went to study philosophy and theology. After his parents died, he was ordained a priest and he gave away his inheritance to the poor. He had a gift of preaching, converting many Muslims and Jews in Andalusia. He preached also by spiritual letters. One of his well-known teachings is called Audi filia (“Hear, O daughter”) which is based on Christian perfection. His biblical commentaries are still read today in the Liturgy of the Hours. Pope St. Paul VI called him a model for modern priests suffering from an identity crisis. St. John is patron saint of Andalusia, Spain.

François de Laval was the first Roman Catholic bishop of Quebec, appointed in 1674. Born into an important family, he became one of the most influential men of his day. He was inspired when he met the Jesuit missionaries among the Hurons in Canada, and wanted to become a missionary himself. After studying in Paris, he was ordained as a priest and appointed archdeacon of his diocese. Francois de Laval devoted his time to caring for the poor and the sick and establishing order in the parishes. For some years after, he devoted himself to prayer living in a hermitage. Because of his great piety, prudence, and competence in business matters, he was nominated to become bishop of New France, which was left without a bishop for the first 50 years of its settlement. Laval’s dream was not only to expand the Catholic Church in New France, but also to build up future leaders. Under his leadership, the Seminary of Quebec was opened to train missionary priests, and later, local boys with a vocation to the priesthood. Laval University and the City of Laval in Quebec are named after this Father of the Church in Canada. Today, we pray for our Catholic brothers and sisters in Quebec, that they may be steadfast in their faith, and also for an increase in vocations to the priesthood in this part of Canada.
